Exploring Araku Valley Train Journey
When it comes to a scenic exploration breathtaking beauty of Araku Valley, there’s no better way than embarking on a scenic train journey referred to as the Kirandul Passenger Train offers services all 7 days a week.
On the Kottavalasa – Kirandul Line
The Kottavalasa – Kirandul line, also known as the KK train line, was originally built for transporting iron ore from the mineral-rich Chhattisgarh state to Visakhapatnam Port City. Today, it has become a popular route for travellers seeking a picturesque ride through the hills.
A Unique Broad Gauge Experience
Unlike most hill trains in India that run on meter gauge or narrow gauge lines, the KK train line stands out as a broad gauge line. Shimiliaguda station, situated along this route, is the highest broad gauge station in India, perched at an elevation of 996.32 meters above mean sea level.
Vistadome Coach for Panoramic Views of the Valley
To enhance the travel experience, a Vistadome coach has been introduced on this route. Priced at Rs 785 per ticket, this air-conditioned tourist compartment features cushioned seats, wide windows, and LCD TVs. The glass-domed coach offers an immersive journey, detached at Araku and reconnected on the return trip to Visakhapatnam.
A Visual Feast: Exploring Tunnels, Bridges, and Waterfalls
As the train traverses the KK line, passengers are treated to mesmerizing views. The journey includes passing through 84 bridges and 58 tunnels, providing a thrilling adventure through the hills. The landscapes unfold on both sides, with waterfalls cascading on the left and the picturesque valley on the right.
After the Chimidipalli station, a spectacular waterfall emerges on the left just after a tunnel, adding to the visual spectacle. The longest tunnel on this route stretches 520 meters. The train also passes above the famous Borra Caves, where a rock support of 100 feet ensures the tracks’ stability.
Train Details and Itinerary
The Kirandul passenger train, No 08551, departs from Visakhapatnam at 6:50 AM and reaches Araku by 10:55 AM. It usually starts from platform number 5, but passengers are advised to check for updates at the inquiry counter on platform no 1.
For those interested in a comprehensive experience, the train offers a rail cum road package in collaboration with AP Tourism. This package combines a train journey to Araku with a return trip by road, covering local tourist spots and the renowned Borra Caves.
Travel Tips and Station Highlights
Passengers should be aware that the return trip often arrives late at Visakhapatnam, potentially impacting onward journeys. If returning by train after visiting Borra Caves, catch the train at Borra Guhalu railway station to avoid travelling back to Araku.
